Police officer Sarojini Shah was driving to Vriksh Vihar. It was early in the morning and she had been called to investigate a break-in at Munim’s house. The thief had apparently made off with an expensive painting, several watches and some pieces of jewellery that were lying around in the master bedroom. Sarojini felt nervous about taking on her first major case. What if she couldn’t solve it? Just then, the town clock chimed loudly seven times to indicate that it was 7 a.m., drawing Sarojini out of her thoughts.

Soon, she reached the house. Munim greeted her and said, “I was away for work yesterday. I returned early in the morning and discovered the break-in.”

Sarojini inspected the bedroom and noticed a broken glass window. Everything was in disarray. She then checked the CCTV footage and found that the recording had been cut off at 6.55 p.m. The thief had obviously tampered with it. Sarojini figured that the robbery had happened after that, around 7 p.m.

She then questioned the neighbours, “What were you doing last evening? Did you happen to hear any noise from Munim’s house?”

Sarojini was able to figure out who the culprit was. How?

Shanmugham is the culprit. Even though Sarojini didn’t tell Shanmugham the time of the robbery, he mentioned the clock chiming seven times and blocking out all noise. This means he knew that the robbery happened at 7 p.m. He used the chiming of the clock to drown out the sound of shattering glass before breaking in.
