The United Nations celebrates 11 July as World Population Day to highlight various problems we all face due to a rising population. Here are some interesting facts about the world’s population you might not know.

  • In 2011, the world’s population reached 7 billion. This year, it is expected to touch 8 billion.
  • Currently, China’s population stands at about 1.4 billion, and India’s at about 1.3 billion. By 2024, India is expected to beat China as the most populous country in the world.
  • With a population of 37 million, Tokyo is the world’s most populous city. It is followed by Delhi at 29 million and Shanghai at 26 million.
  • With a population of about 1,000, Vatican City is the least populous country.
  • According to the United Nations, 250 babies are born every minute.
  • New Zealand has more sheep than people.
  • Nepal has the highest population of women in the world. Women make up about 54 per cent of its population.
