Ritika and Latika were the naughtiest girls in class 6C. They were constantly competing with each other to be the bigger prankster. After they both caught for a prank that backfired, they had been given detention after school, which meant an extra hour with their maths teacher, Ms. Rose.

After the last bell, both girls headed for detention, where Ms. Rose was waiting for them. “I have a lot of papers to correct, so I don’t want either of you to make any noise. Got it?” she snapped.

“Yes, ma’am,” the girls said.

Ritika and Latika sat next to each other, passing chits full of taunts.

“Girls! What is this? I told you to behave yourselves and you’re passing chits in detention?”

“S-sorry, ma’am,” Ritika said.

“Sorry, ma’am. It won’t happen again,” Latika added.

“You’re right, it won’t. You’re both going to finish the maths homework I gave you earlier today. I’ll be right back. And not a word from you,” she said and stepped out.

Five minutes later, when Ms. Rose returned, she was shocked.

“No, ma’am! She is lying!” Latika was in tears.

Ms. Rose looked at her students for a minute and said, “I know who has done this. You will be punished not only for ruining someone’s exam paper but also for lying to a teacher.”

Who cut up the exam paper and how did you figure that out?

Hot Tip: Look for clues in the illustration!

Ritika is lying and blaming Latika for something she did. Latika would not be able to cut a neat circle as seen in the image. Latika is left-handed, so it would not be easy for her to use a regular pair of scissors, since they’re made for people who are right-handed.
