Before You Start: A tongue-twister is a sequence of words or a sentence which is very tough to say accurately, even more so when you try to say it fast! Practising tongue-twisters can be a fun activity as you laugh at your mistakes. Moreover, it can also help you hone your pronunciation!

Let’s begin!

1. She sells sea shells on the sea shore.

2. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

3. Give papa a cup of proper coffee in a copper coffee cup.

4. How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?

5. Good blood, bad blood (repeat it multiple times).

6. I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch.

7. Betty Botter bought some butter. “But,” said she, “this butter’s bitter! If I put it in my batter, it will make my batter bitter. But a bit of better butter will but make my batter better.” Then she bought a bit of butter, better than the bitter butter, and made her bitter batter better. So ’twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter!

8. A tutor who tooted the flute tried to teach two young tooters to toot. Said the two to the tutor, “Is it harder to toot, or to tutor two tooters to toot?”

9. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

10. Pad kid poured curd pulled cod.

Before You Go: Here’s a fun fact! Some of these tongue-twisters come from songs that were written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The last twister on our list was actually developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is considered to be the toughest tongue-twister ever!
