Have you ever heard of Kadambini Ganguly? She was South Asia’s first female doctor! Here are some interesting facts about Ganguly that you didn’t know!

  • She was one of the first women to graduate in the entire British Empire!
  • In 1884, Ganguly became the first woman to gain admission to Calcutta Medical College.
  • However, a lot of people were unhappy with her presence there. In fact, one professor failed her in a paper and she lost her Bachelor of Medicine certificate.
  • Finally, she obtained three diplomas from Scottish College at Edinburgh. Her diplomas were: Licentiate of the College of Physicians, Edinburg (LRCP), Licentiate of the College of Surgeons, Glasgow (LRCS), and Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, Dublin (LFPS).
  • A notable incident took place when she was practising medicine after her return from England. A few male doctors diagnosed a tumour in a woman’s abdomen. However, Ganguly correctly diagnosed that the woman was actually pregnant.
